Nevertheless, the farm stayed in the family.
In 1946 the youngest son, Ralph (Bud), purchased the 320 acre farm from his father. Bud married Carmella Rosenbaum in the same year. They had 3 children. The youngest Jeanie married Karl Zweibohmer and they worked the Holtey farm for 26 years until 1993. Besides Bud, William and Pauline Holtey’s other children who married included: Marie who married Clarence Danielson in 1928. They had no children. Beatta married Elmer Schissel in 1929. They had 6 children. Joseph married Tony Hammang in 1933. They had 6 children. Adelia married Quain Kinsey. They had no children. Bill married Gladys June in 1940. Frances married Harold Gabel in 1940. They had 5 children.
Joseph remained in Iowa, becoming a well-known Ossian physician and surgeon, who practiced medicine in his hometown from 1933 until his death from cancer in April 1962. Four months later his 23-year old son, Brian, died in a drowning accident in the Mississippi River. The other 5 children are: Warren, MD of Marshfield, Wl; Carol Farr of LaJolla, CA: Joseph of Prescott, AZ; Father Gary of SanDiego, CA; and Jud of Ashland, OR.

Alfred Leonard Holzer was born 10 Apr 1897 near Locust, IA. He grew up in Ossian, IA. Alfred was the son of Emil and Ida (Thomann) Holzer.
On 24 Jan 1932 Alfred married Myrtie Grindeland in Valparaiso, IN. Myrtle was born 24 Aug 1897 in Pleasant Twp., Winneshiek Co. She was the daughter of William and Sophie (Bidne) Grindeland. Myrtle had one brother and 5 sisters: Walter (m. Gladys Jacobson), Emma (m. Alfred Young), Clara (Ole Haugen), Bertha (m. Clarence Bidne), Anna (m. Glen Headington) and Marie (m. a Jarstad).
Alfred and Myrtle had one son, Dean Holzer born n Decorah. Dean married Doris Anna Koch. Her parents were Walter and Mabel (Monson) Koch. Doris was one of nine children.
Dean and Doris have two children: Dwight and Deanne . Dwight married Janeen Stortz. They later divorced. They have three sons: Jesse, Jared and Daniel. Deanne married Kelly Krull Kelly and Deanne have one son, Nathan. Alfred and Myrtle owned a farm in Pleasant Twp. about a half mile west of the Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church. For 55 years, Alfred worked for the Maudlin Construction Co. of Webster City, IA during the summer. Myrtle and their son, Dean, accompanied Alfred from job to job with Myrtle cooking forthe construction crew and keeping the books.
Hoppel, Donald and Linda (Gipp)

Linda Kay (Gipp) Hoppel was born in Decorah, IA the daughter of Elmer and Edith (Sersland) Gipp. She grew up on the family farm southeast of Decorah and attended country school through the 8th grade. She graduated from Decorah High School May 1960 and from Waldorf College, Forest City, IA May 1962. Linda worked as parish secretary at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, Ames,
IA for 5 years.
On 12 Aug 1967 Linda married Donald A. Hoppel at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church rural Decorah. Don grew up in Belmond. He attended Belmond Community Schools graduating in May 1954. He then attended Webster City Jr. College, Webster City, IA graduating in May 1956. Don went on to Iowa State Teacher’s College, Cedar Falls, IA (now the University, of Northern Iowa) graduating May 1958 with a B.A. Degree in Education. After graduation he accepted a teaching contract at Garner-Hayfield Community School District in the fall of 1959.
Don and Linda have made their home in Garner. They have 2 children: Scott and Mark. Scott is a graduate of U.N.I. and presently is a teacher and coach in Osage, IA.
Mark is a student at Waldorf College and plans to continue his education at U.N.I.. He also plans to teach and coach.
Don was a teacher, coach, principal and athletic director in the Garner-Hayfield School system for 34 years. Since retiring in 1993 he still enjoys doing substitute teaching and helping at athletic events when needed.
Don and Linda are members of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, IA. Linda has been active in church circle, a Sunday School teacher and in many community clubs. The Hoppel family has always attended the many sports and band activities in which their sons were involved at school. They have been avid Hawkeye football fans going to all home games and even attending some of the away games plus 2 Rose Bowls. They also enjoy attending major league baseball games and have been to several major league parks throughout the U.S.
